Your past keeps coming up and affecting your current relationships. You have tried to push them away or forget about them altogether, but it’s not that easy. You want to move forward in your life, but you feel stuck in your thoughts.
Your relationships may be suffering because you’re often triggered by past events. This may be a relationship that did not end well, abuse, or trauma from your past. You try and remind yourself that the things that happened back then have nothing to do with the people you love. So, you shouldn’t take your pain out on them. But, somehow the memories of what happened continue to work their way into your mind. Worst of all, they wreak havoc on the relationships that matter most to you.
When one partner has experienced trauma, the memory of it can stick in the emotional side of your brain. This makes it very hard to process logically. When this happens, it may leave you feeling like you’re unable to move forward in a healthy way.
What you’re experiencing is a normal trauma response. But, help is available. Eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) can help reprocess your past pain so you can move on with confidence.
What is Relationship Trauma?
Relationship trauma can come in many different forms. In fact, the American Psychological Association says “trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event.”
Some common examples of relationship trauma include:
Physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, financial, or psychological abuse
Emotional or physical neglect
Divorce
Abandonment
Constant fighting or tension
Inappropriate family dynamics
Caring for an addict or a loved one with mental illness
… and more.
What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR is short for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. It is a therapeutic tool used to help clients reprocess painful events from their past. A trauma therapist accomplishes this through a technique called bilateral stimulation. This means we stimulate both the left and the right sides of your brain. An EMDR therapist will provide this using handles that vibrate, tapping both sides of the body, or waving a finger to move your eyes from left to right. The goal is this treatment is to move the past trauma from the emotional side of your brain to the logical side. This way, your brain can process it and help you feel less triggered by memories of what happened in the past.
EMDR can help with…
Trauma and PTSD
Relationship difficulties
Anxiety
Depression
Performance issues
Grief and loss
At our practice, we specialize in helping couples and families thrive. If one partner suffers from past trauma it can make couples therapy work challenging. In this case, one of our skilled couple or family therapists may recommend EMDR therapy as a way to promote healing.
When one partner gets EMDR therapy they often find that in a few sessions, they feel unburdened and free to move forward in their lives. Many people report feeling calm, relaxed, and content after EMDR sessions. The traumatic, haunting memories no longer feel powerful and overwhelming. The re-processed memories are now neutral rather than distressing.
